Artist's Narrative

Sogbety Diomande, native of the Ivory Coast in West Africa, has been performing since he was a child.  He has been a member of Ballet National de Cote d’Ivoire, Kotchegna Dance Company, and has been featured with many troupes in NYC and around the US.  Sogbety started his own troupe in 2005.  His troupe performs at festivals and in colleges throughout the U.S.  He spends most of his time working as a solo artist doing drum workshops, assemblies and lectures in schools, universities, community centers, and juvenile correctional facilities.

Programs Available

Performance (Grade levels K - 12)
In this high-energy performance, students will experience the rhythms, dances, and songs of West Africa.   Treat your students to a program that is both educational and fun! Q & A time follows the show.

Discover West African Rhythm through Drumming and Dance (Grade levels K - 12)

In this workshop, students will learn the three basic sounds of the African djembe.  They will also learn basic techniques of hand drumming, focusing on drumming styles found in the Ivory Coast.  Q & A with the artist follows.

Artist will provide up to 30 drums per classroom.

  • Requirements: armless chairs in a circle for each student

West African Drumming Residency (Grade levels K - 12)
This is a great way for students to be immersed in the culture of West Africa.  They will learn about the rhythms, songs, and languages found in the villages of the Ivory Coast.  Residencies will be custom tailored to fit your school's needs.

Drumming Residency
  • Duration: varies
  • Fees: $400/ 1st day; $300/ each additional day; $1500/ full week; plus mileage from Mansfield ($50)
  • Requirements: Armless chairs in a circle for each student. Housing and meals (or perdiem) are also required if site is more than 60 miles from Mansfield.
