Artist's Narrative

With his unique blend of professional experience in schools and colleges, as well as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the BBC, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, etc., Roger Jerome offers unusual programs. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and having spent many years teaching at the elementary and college levels,  he has honed his skills in working with young people, stressing participatory and creative possibilities. For the last 18 years, he has developed a variety of theatrical presentations of British literary material, tailor-made for American schools. Whether it’s Scrooge, Hamlet, the 3 Sillies, the Jabberwocky, or whomsoever, it’s well worth considering this outstanding and surprising talent from across the Atlantic. Shakespearean Appearances (Grade levels 7-12)
An exploration of the dominant theme of Appearance v. Reality in Shakespeare's plays. Key speeches are performed by Roger Jerome, interspersed with parallel improvisations, which are ad-libbed by eight students, who are briefed 60 minutes before the show. Challenging, informative and thought-provoking.

Merlin Remembers (Grade levels 4-10)
The old wizard, with the aid of his memory-basket, tells the story of the mighty King Arthur. Students try to pull the sword from the stone and are then coached in rudimentary sword-skills in re-enacting the final Battle of Camlaan.

Dickens in Ohio (Grade levels 7-12)
The famous writer recalls his time in Ohio in April 1842. Program includes 10 people that he met, 20 period songs and comments on slavery, Indian resettlement, modes of travel, politics, temperance, etc.. An indispensible aid for teachers of Ohio history.

Lecture/Discussion: Differences between US and UK societies then and now

A Dickens of a Christmas (Grade levels K-12)
Charles Dickens himself conducts a Victorian Christmas party, performing magic, telling a ghost story and presenting a participatory song in which a man freezes to death !!

Alice and Company (Grade levels 1-6)
The main episodes are presented by Roger Jerome, with the aid of large playing-card versions of Tenniel's illustrations of the characters. The audience participates throughout by singing, sneezing, mirroring, clicking, riddling, etc.

The Stranger's Voice (Grade levels K-12)
Adaptable to any age-group, this is a selection of British folk-tales told in authentic regional dialects. Traditional songs and British flags are also included. With the theme of a stranger in the community, this program can serve an an introduction to the geography of Britain.

A background of 50 years in teaching and lecturing in the UK and the U.S.A. enables Roger Jerome to present strong and persuasive workshops on the use of process-drama. Varied techniques, both old and new, are employed with clear indications of their pedagogical use and links to Ohio's standards.
