Artist's Narrative

Drawing on his experiences as a classroom teacher, author, storyteller, traveler, father of four, and student of life - and with over 35 hours worth of stories in his repertoire - Michael R. Kasony-O’Malley offers a variety of storytelling performances & programs, including school-wide assembly performances, family night programs, classroom workshops, professional development seminars, and one-week & two-week residencies.

The Irish poet W. B. Yeats said, “Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire.”  In all of his programs, Michael lights that fire – creating an excitement about books, stories, reading, writing, and much, much more.

Programs Available

Author Visit (Grade levels K-8)
Michael R. Kasony-O’Malley is the author of the acclaimed children’s book, An Irish Tale:  Tom Moore & The Seal Woman.  The Irish newspaper The Avondhu said, “Kasony-O’Malley breathes fire into the old Irish legends…The Tom Moore story is told so well that you can almost hear the sound of the sea crashing onto the rocks.”

During Michael’s full-day Author Visit, he discusses his book and offers programs that focus on both story writing and story telling.  Programs include writing workshops, presentations about the Tom Moore book, question & answer sessions, and storytelling performances.

Note: two schools may share a one-day Author Visit.  You may arrange for Michael to visit one school in the morning and the other school in the afternoon.

Storytelling Performances (Grade levels K-12)
Michael has five areas of focus in his storytelling work:  Irish Tales, Slovak Stories, Christmas Legends, Earth Mother Stories, & Family Stories. Within each of these five areas, Michael has several hours worth of stories so that he may tailor each storytelling performance to the specific age range of the audience.

  • Duration: 45-60 min.
  • Fees: $450/ $200 each addt'l
  • Requirements: Elementary schools often schedule a primary and intermediate program; middle schools often schedule one program per grade level.

Writing and Storytelling Workshops (Grade levels K-12)
From Storytelling to Story Writing - "The Art Of Keeping That Pencil Moving" (Grade levels 3-12) Combining the art of storytelling with the art of creative writing, Michael shares original tales and describes his personal writing strategies, while leading students through writing exercises & the writing process. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students.

Storytelling for Young Tellers - "You're The Storyteller!" (Grade levels K-12) Michael leads an assortment of highly interactive workshops that teach students how to "tell the tales" themselves.  Introductory, intermediate or advanced levels are available. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students. For more extensive storytelling training, ask Michael about his residency programs.

Stories for the Earth Mother - "What's Science Got To Do With It?" (Grade levels K-8) Michael combines the art of storytelling with hands-on science experiments to educate young people about environmental issues. Each workshop is tailored to the grade level of the students.

Family Night/Literacy Night Programs (Family)
Michael has a range of entertaining storytelling programs available that highlight both the importance of reading at home and the value of sharing our family stories in the home.

Family Night/Literacy Night
  • Duration: 45-60 min.
  • Fees: $550/ $250 if scheduled on the same day as other storytelling performances or workshops.

Professional Development/Teacher In-Service Programs (Adult)
Drawing from his experience as a classroom teacher, a storyteller, and an author, Michael leads a number of professional development seminars that explore the great potential for storytelling as a learning tool, offering a number of specific, "tried and true treasures” for "bringing life to the printed word" in the classroom.

  • Fees: $550/ $250 if scheduled on the same day as other storytelling performances or workshops.

Storytelling and Story Writing Residencies (Grade levels K-8)
One Week and Two Week Storytelling & Writing Residencies This is THE BIG ONE! School-wide storytelling performances, interactive small-group writing workshops, student writing, student performances & much more are available with Michael’s full-week residences. Each residency is planned & tailored to meet the
school's specific educational objectives.
