Artist's Narrative

Seona McDowell was born in India of English/ Irish parents. She grew up on a farm in New Zealand and later moved to Australia where she began performing. Seona won the OZ music award for Best Australian Folksinger two years in a row, toured with such stars as Roy Orbison and Don McClean, and had a program on Australian history in the schools for many years. She is now in America where she has been with the Ohio, Florida, and Maryland Arts Councils, and is performing constantly throughout most of the United States. The Maryland Arts Council put her through the Teaching Arts Institute program and in the summer of 2008 she instructed 100 teachers in arts intigration for the Marlyand Arts Teaching Institute.

Seona had an award winning program on NPR, "WCPN live with Seona McDowell," and does programs and concerts for schools, librarires, colleges and festivals. Playing guitar, autoharp and didgeridoo, she will have the audience singing, clapping, bush dancing, playing in her bush band as well as learning how to play the didgeridoo.

Australia, The Land Down Under (Grade levels K-12)

This program depicts the unique life and origins of this country. From the Aborigines to the convicts, and later, the goldminers, shearers, drovers, bushrangers and free settlers, Australia is a multi-cultural mix as is America. Much audience participation.

Citizens of the World (Grade levels K-7)

With songs and stories, Citizens of the World celebrates the differences and similarities of culture throughout the world. This program shows that through travel and immigration, people have incorporated one another's traditions and accepted them as their own. Audience participation.

Celebrate the Season (Grade levels K-8)

Throughout the world, families and communities have traditional festivals to see out the old year; some are bound in religious ceremonies. The lighting of candles and fireworks, busy kitchens, and family gatherings are a common thread as well as the giving of gifts. Each festival has its own significance. This program highlights some of these traditions in song and dance. Audience participation.

Erin Go Bragh (Grade levels K-7)

On the 17th of March, everyone is Irish. The Irish are noted for their blarney, humor, literature and music. This is a fun program that provides an insight into Irish life and character through music and dance.
