COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) awarded 394 Funds for Artists grants totaling $196,625 from May 1 through July 31, 2024. A first round of 497 grants was awarded for March through April. Of the May-July grants awarded, 202, or 51 percent, are for first-time applicants to the program.
“With nearly 1,000 artists funded so far this year, I feel confident that we will fund more artists than ever before in 2024,” said GCAC’s Grants & Community Engagement Director McKenzi Swinehart. “The remarkable number of new applications in the last quarter is a testament to the outreach done by our Grants & Community Engagement team, our GCAC Navigators and our board. There are still more funds available, so we hope the community will continue to spread the word.”
“A big trend I noticed this time around is that the artists who apply for Funds For Artists are also applying for other GCAC grants like Artists Projects or Project support, and are in general becoming more curious about how else they can get funding for their work,” added Grants & Community Engagement Associate Ariel Peguero. “The number of new applicants also keeps increasing. This is a great sign because it means we are reaching more artists in other areas of Columbus. We still have a few months left in the grant cycle and we are expecting a big push in applications before it closes in October.”
Funds for Artists grants are intended to assist individual artists and groups of artists creating together on a permanent basis in making new art, growing artistic skills and marketing to a broader audience. Artists can apply for up to $500 through October, 2024. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
